Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Roberts in the title role, was released in 2000 to critical and box office success.
The movie is based on the real-life experiences of Erin Brockovich-Ellis who, despite having no formal education or training in law, was instrumental in a record-breaking civil case in America.
Erin, a single mother of three, needs to muster all her courage and talents to prove Pacific Gas and Electric Company knowingly endangered the lives of the residents of Hinkley, California.
And she did it. Here are 10 tips from the movie for getting to where you want to be, even if you come from humble beginnings:
1. Don’t be discouraged, you can do it
Finding a job is tough. If you lack experience and qualifications, it might even seem impossible. Just don’t give up.
2. Know your strengths and sell yourself
If you don’t have any qualifications or experience to fall back on, it is extra important to sell the strengths you can bring to the table.
3. Fight for your chance
Sometimes you are just going to have to be more forceful if you want people to notice you and take you seriously.
4. Use your initiative
Once you have the job, show them your capabilities by doing more than just what is expected. Make them realise you are an asset.
5. Go the extra mile
Sometimes you will be asked to go beyond the call of duty – be willing to this. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty, you’re effort will be noticed.
6. Use what you got
There is more to getting a job done than having a qualification, so use your natural talents and abilities whenever needed.
7. Be prepared to make sacrifices
Initially you will most likely need to sacrifice some of your personal time to get to grips with and master your responsibilities.
8. Think on your feet
You will be faced with many different situations, and you need to adapt. Understand the people you work with and make them comfortable with the idea of working with you.
9. Don’t give up
You will face many obstacles, but they are just there for you to overcome. Overcoming your obstacles will make the reward so much better.
10. Don’t be offended by low expectations and see the humour
People might not expect much from you, but don’t take it personally. Show them how easily you can overcome their low expectations. And don’t forget to see the humour in the situations you find yourself in.
If you work hard and never give up, you might just reap amazing rewards. Good luck!
