Statistics South Africa recently released their unemployment figures for the first quarter of 2016. The latest report detailing South Africa’s labour force paints a gloomy picture. The decrease in the number of employed people during the last quarter is the worst we have seen since 2010.

When it comes to the female workforce in South Africa, not all is hopeless. In most tertiary professions, like managers and professionals, the amount of female employees showed steady growth over the past few quarters.

Unfortunately, the growing population and increased overall unemployment figures overshadow any inroads that might have been made during this period. Most South African women are still unemployed or not economically active.
