Winter is here, and we know how you can fight off the chills and stay warm – enjoy cosy nights in, snuggling up together to deliciously mellow songs. It won’t even cost you a cent.

For your cuddle convenience Counting Coins has compiled a 20-track playlist. (It was really hard – so much music…)

So, in no particular order, enjoy:

Breathe me – Sia

This pre-David Guetta Sia song is quiet and understated, and so beautiful. Perfect for cosying up together… “Wrap me up, unfold me/I am small, I’m needy/Warm me up and breathe me”.

This year’s love – David Gray

This classic love song needs no introduction. Enjoy the cuddle… “And when you kiss me/On that midnight street/Sweep me off my feet/Singing ain’t this life so sweet”.

Glass Vase Cello Case – Tattle Tale

“Breathe into my hands are cupped/And like a glass to drink from…” With a scattering of pretty lyrics, this song’s main focus is on the soothing instrumental melody.

The Book of Love – Peter Gabriel

A golden oldie, this song from the legendary Peter Gabriel tells us that “The book of love is long and boring/No one can lift the damn thing” – but there is a ‘but’: “But I/I love it when you read to me/And you/You can read me anything”. Definitely snuggle-worthy.

Waiting For My Real Life To Begin – Colin Hay

We might not have the perfect lives, and dream of more, but at least we can cuddle up with our loved ones and be still – “And you say, be still my love/Open up your heart/Let the light shine in”.

I wish I was I was the moon – Neko Case

A sweet and simple blend of melancholy and nostalgia, this song hits the spot on a chilly evening – “How will you know if you found me at last/’Cause I’ll be the one, be the one, be the one/With my heart in my lap”.

Everlong (Acoustic) – Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters might not be the first band you look to for the perfect cuddle tune – luckily we have acoustic versions, and this is one of the greats – “And I wonder when I sing along with you/If everything could ever feel this real forever/If anything could ever be this good again”. ‘Nough said.

The idea of growing old – The Features

One of the faster-paced contributions to this list, this song is all about savouring the one you have decided to cuddle and grow old with – “We can settle down for an afternoon nap/You turn me on to the idea of growing old”.

They bring me to you – Joshua Radin

“Moon pours through the ceiling tonight/Embraces us tight/Shows me we’re right for each other/And as we lie here and let the world fade away/The sunrise tries to end it while we try to stay”. What more is there to say?

More Than I asked For – Joy Williams

This might technically be a Christmas song, but it is simple and sweet and perfect for cuddling up with someone special on a winter’s night – “Hold me so/stay under the mistletoe/no, don’t go/’cause when you’re near I can’t stop smiling”.

Mono – Fightstar

Fightstar might also not be a band you’d normally associate with cuddle music, but this slow-burning tune’s melody simmers gently as it builds. “I’ve started up the clocks/It’s time I left behind/And everything we’ve lost/Disappears” – ideal for alternative music lovers to cuddle to. (Bonus fact: Fightstar’s frontman used to be in Busted.)

Fair – Remy Zero

Yes, it’s that band that had that song for that series. This sweet and pretty song will soothe you with its acoustic guitar riffs – “When you’d hide your songs would die/So I’d hide yours with mine”. So pretty.

The Sea and the Rhythm – Iron & Wine

Any Iron & Wind album is basically a soundtrack to cuddling, so how do you choose? Well, it was hard, but this song about eating cake by the ocean – as the ocean – spins a delightfully mellow and safe cocoon – “Your hands they move like waves over me/Beneath the moon, tonight, we’re the sea”.

Swing life away – Rise Against

Another band not famous for being mellow… This song is the waning of summer – sweet and pretty, sprinkled with nostalgia. “If love is a labour I’ll slave till the end/I won’t cross these streets until you hold my hand.”

Hands down (Acoustic) – Dashboard Confessional

“My hopes are so high/That your kiss might kill me/So won’t you kill me/So I die happy” – what more needs to be said? The acoustic version of this song about discovering love and ‘firsts’ is even more wistful, and so adorable to cuddle up to.

Dry Land – Joan Armatrading

“Let me sail/To the depths of your soul/Let me anchor as near as I can be/To your shore.” This lady knows how to write a song – “I’m coming into dry land/Been a long time at sea/And the season of loving/Has long awaited me”.

Nine Million Bicycles – Katie Melua

Chocolaty smooth and decadent, this wistful tune is perfect for cuddling to.

Give me love – Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran has so many cuddle-worthy songs, but this song from his first album always manages to pull the heartstrings: “Give me love like never before/’Cause lately I’ve been craving more”.

Again – Lenny Kravitz

A beautiful song by an utterly beautiful man – “I been searching for you/I heard a cry within my soul/I never had a yearning quite like this before/Now that you are walking right through my door”. Yes please. And thank you.

Blood Bank – Bon Iver

Of course Bon Iver was going to be on this list. And with an offering of so many melancholy-infused songs, picking one was not easy. I went with Blood Bank – “You said ‘ain’t this just like the present/To be showing up like this’/As a moon waned to crescent/We started to kiss”.
