Sunshine Cleaning is a movie about two sisters who decide to start a “biohazard removal and crime scene clean-up” company. In the process they learn a lot about life, business, each other, and themselves. And as the movie’s tagline states “Life is a messy business.” As is starting your own company.
Here are 11 tips from Sunshine Cleaning on starting your own business:
1. Find something that can make you money
This sounds logical: you are starting a business to make money, right? But keep your eyes open, there might be something right under your nose that can make you rich.
2. Find your market
Who will be your future clients? You need to know this, and market your product and services to them.
3. Be unique
Even if you’re trying to break into an existing industry, find something that makes your business unique and different; something that will grab the market’s attention.
4. Believe in yourself
This is not as easy as it sounds, but if you don’t believe in yourself and your ideas, why would anyone else?
5. Do it right
If you’re going to do it, do it right from the beginning. Know the laws and regulations you need to adhere to, and keep your side clean. Once you’re rich and successful, you don’t want a silly little mistake you made in the early days to come and bite you in the ass.
6. Be prepared to make sacrifices
In all likelihood it will be hard to get your business off the ground. You will need to sacrifice time, effort, money, and, not to mention, a little dignity. Be prepared for this.
Be prepared for late nights, sleep deprivation and the interruption of plans, social or otherwise. What your business might need can be unpredictable, especially in the early days, so be prepared to not be prepared, but getting up and going anyway.
7. Push the limits
You might have to do things you never thought you would do (legal things, of course) to make your business successful. Push yourself, and you will be amazed at the barriers you can overcome. Entrepreneurs aren’t meant for comfort zones.
8. Make connections
You never know who you might meet who can affect or change your business, or open doors for you. Connections are vital to the success of a business, so network.
9. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
Your business might be your baby, but sometimes we all need a little help. Don’t be afraid to ask advice from your friends if they have different skill sets than you. Just keep in mind to not exploit your friends. It’s like the Beatles say, you’ll get by with a little help from your friends. Just don’t give up!
10. Put your customers first
Going the extra mile for your customer will not only earn you his or her loyalty, but also ensure that only good things are said and spread about your business.
11. Love what you do
You might end up in an industry you never saw yourself in, for example biohazard removal and crime scene clean-up. Whatever it is you end up doing, make sure you can be passionate about it, even if it is only one aspect of what you do with your life. This is your life, and you have to make the most of it.
Starting your own business is hard, and scary, and will test you in many ways. But, if you have your own successful business, you’ll have epic bragging rights for life.
